Sentimental Value
by Andrii Halishchev
In this project, I tried to show how the photography function could change over time. In 2020, I shot a roll of film of an abandoned airfield with dozens of old jets which I recently discovered near my hometown, Vovchansk, Ukraine. Decades ago, this establishment was used for training new pilots, but as the Soviet Union fell, so too did the airfield fall into disrepair.
In February 2022, Vovchansk was occupied by Russia, and it became one of the centers of modern urban warfare. This has resulted in the demolition of the whole town, including the airbase. Taking a look at these photos a few years later made me realize how the function of photography has been shifted from self-expression to preservation. Capture what you value and save it for the next generations, at least as a film negative
