Flourish

(May 2022)

by Erín Moure

To always bear this certain tension
An inheritance
An interstice
Melody
It comes from my mother
she was born in lands of Ukraine
she was ever a resistant
she knew how to disappear
how to fully vanish
leaving no residue
but wind and snow

Into me she
has vanished
every day she gets up washes her
face vanishes
walking the full length of the kitchen on
the wind into the snow
My face wet
I wipe it with my forearm
“use a towel” she says from inside me
“mom there is none in this snow”
:
:
I see her again this very morning
perched on a branch outside where should be birds
When I visited her then in ancient Calgary
(ancient because before the war)
she wanted me to make my coffee first
so she could make hers with just the residue
in case of bombings
that alter the terrain
so that it cannot be thereafter mediated or even known
Bombs upend the earth
artifice where love is no
co-incidence
Знову зацвіте українська земля                       Ukrainian land will blossom again

She is now (my mother) no bigger than a bird
small and fluffed
brown and grey
When dead for fifteen years it happens
you start vanishing slowly from the world          La terre ukrainienne refleurira
its periscopes
its holograms
its scapulae and palettes
your feathers
tiny
indecent partisans of the snows
Still audible yes oh yes
as birdsong
berries grasses
as a hardiness
as blossoms
roots
in me as residue
she endures and is still speaking

(Ukraine will flourish)
