New Year, 2020
by Mia Huang
This series of memories was mostly taken on an expired Fuji ETERNA 250D in Wuhan (2020), where and when the first case of Covid-19 took place.
1: Every activity involving physical interaction was forbidden at the time. The intention was futile for both the virus and the people. The death toll kept growing. You may hear some relatives of some acquaintances passed away while the rest of us still struggled to live through. Phone numbers of butcher stall owners were written anywhere visible. You could call them to get groceries.
2-3: The stringency of lockdown was inhumane and uneven. I sneaked out to the park, the pool and merry-go-round looked just like any other still, tranquil morning.
4-7: I went back to the same park after 2 months or so, when the turmoil seemed to die down. Unlike the flowers and plants, people were distanced by masks, by space, by sorrow. Yellow gives me a sense of resilience. Spring started to step in.
8: The red cotton suit hanging on the wardrobe belongs to my mom. Everything happened around the Lunar New Year. She worked at the hospital, and she was never home (during that time). Nothing was edited in any piece; I want to preserve all as it will always be in my mind.
