My collage work is an examination into personal ancestry and immigrant history. As a second-generation Canadian, I have felt disconnected from my German and Malaysian-Chinese heritage, motivating me to focus on a collection of family photographs that were passed down to me. Scanning these old photographs and editing them with my own contemporary images allows me to merge past and present, looking for surprises and similarities that are cultural and visual. Continually working with these photographs has brought my attention towards migration’s effect on familial and self-knowledge. For me, this process of splicing together new and old photographs gives the image another life; a renewed glimpse into a fading memory.
ABOUT THE CREATOR
Angeline Teoh Simon is a multidisciplinary artist based in Lethbridge, AB/Treaty 7 Territory. She graduated from the University of Lethbridge in 2018 with a BFA in Studio Art. As a second-generation biracial Canadian, her practice explores familial narratives and the dynamics within contrasting cultures. Working with collage and ceramics, Simon’s practice investigates intergenerational memory and diaspora, stemming from her experience spending summers with her maternal family in Malaysia. Her work has been exhibited at galleries and institutions including Art Gallery of Alberta, Esker Foundation, Harcourt House Artist Run Centre, Southern Alberta Art Gallery and PLATFORM Centre for Photographic Arts.
